In the Far North of Cameroon, where recurrent floods and chronic food insecurity continue to affect vulnerable communities, the Cameroon Red Cross Society, with support from the French Red Cross and the IFRC, supported women-led and community-based resilience initiatives aimed at strengthening food security, livelihoods, and household well-being. Through community-managed cereal banks, mothers’ clubs, and income-generating activities, women played a central role in helping families better cope with seasonal shortages while also increasing women’s leadership and participation in community decision-making.
Combining livelihoods support, community ownership, and Protection, Gender and Inclusion (PGI) approaches, the initiative also contributed to stronger support systems for children and families, promoted girls’ education and awareness on the risks of early marriage, and highlighted how locally led food security and livelihoods programming can foster dignity, resilience, and social change in crisis-prone settings.
