In Madagascar, an initiative by the Malagasy Red Cross and IFRC has demonstrated the transformative impact of integrating child protection and education within shelter projects.
This multi-sectoral approach culminated in the creation of safe spaces for children in the rural village of Mananjary, where a playground and rejuvenated community area now stand beside their schools. These newly established play spaces not only address the critical need for safe gathering areas but also enrich the educational environment by promoting their cognitive, physical, and emotional development.
By integrating a playground directly adjacent to the primary and secondary school, the project has created an environment where children can engage in free play, imagination, and socialization, thereby enhancing their overall educational experience and classroom performance. The playground, equipped with slides, swings, and an agility course, offers a novel and much-needed respite from the cramped and hazardous conditions of local huts.
This initiative underscores the profound benefits of linking education and child protection through a multi-sectoral approach, highlighting how safe and stimulating environments can drive positive outcomes in both learning and well-being. As the community embraces these changes, including the potential establishment of a model library, this project serves as an inspiring example of how integrated strategies can foster safer, more inclusive, and supportive spaces for children.
