Discover how the Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS) is addressing sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in schools, creating safer learning environments, and promoting holistic development for Liberian children.
In a nation where over 60% of the population is under 35, the education system faces immense challenges, compounded by high rates of violence against children, especially girls. Ranked 19th among the top 100 countries at risk of educational disruption, Liberia struggles with pervasive SGBV in schools, with one in five students experiencing abuse from teachers or staff. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the LNRCS initiated a comprehensive program leveraging community-based initiatives to tackle the root causes of SGBV, foster safer learning environments, and empower students to advocate for their rights.
This case study highlights the LNRCS's efforts in mobilizing over 1,000 participants across 13 rural schools, engaging students in awareness-raising activities, and fostering a culture of zero tolerance for violence. Through school clubs, mass awareness campaigns, and collaboration with local authorities, the program equips students with the knowledge and resources to prevent, recognize, and report abuse, contributing to safer and more inclusive educational spaces.
Join us in exploring the successes, challenges, and recommendations of this impactful initiative, and learn how comprehensive interventions can drive positive change in the fight against SGBV in schools.
