Case Study: Spanish Red Cross Protection and Assistance to Unaccompanied and Separated Children

The Spanish Red Cross Accompaniment project works with unaccompanied child migrants ages 16-22 years old. The project has been running for 20 years in locations across Spain. The Spanish Red Cross provides a menu of services including: supporting access to education, advocating for the rights of children with local authorities, assisting access to healthcare, Restoring Family Links, and working to build connections with local youth and communities through various cultural and recreational activities.

Case Study: Rwanda Red Cross Child Friendly Spaces

The Rwanda Red Cross (RRC) has been actively involved in establishing and supporting Child Safe Spaces (CSS) within refugee camps across Rwanda, including Mahama, Nyabiheke, Kiziba, and Nkamira. These camps host thousands of refugees, many of whom are children facing heightened risks of exploitation, abuse, neglect, and psychosocial distress due to displacement and adverse living conditions.

Case Study: Syrian Arab Red Crescent Protection and Assistance to Separated Children

As part of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent response to an influx of people crossing from Lebanon into Syria due to escalating hostilities in Lebanon, protective bracelets were provided for all children to identify them and their respective caregiver. This was to limit children becoming separated at the Jdeidet Yabous border crossing. A total of 1,750 bracelets were assigned.

Development. The programme responds to the compounded effects of HIV/AIDS, poverty, and family crises, which have left many children orphaned or highly vulnerable.

Case Study - Hungarian Red Cross Development Centre for Children with Disabilities

The Developmental Center provides stable, safe, and inclusive support for children in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County, with a special focus on Ukrainian refugee families and children with disabilities or special educational needs. The programme offered individually tailored developmental activities, structured play sessions, thematic workshops, sensory and physical exercise programmes, as well as parental guidance and community engagement opportunities. The programme was implemented in Nyíregyháza, initially in a temporary location and later in a permanent, purpose-equipped center that ensured child safety, accessibility, and a welcoming environment.

Case Study: Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Protection of Child Orphans

The Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross is delivering services to children who are orphaned or in vulnerable situations through a partnership with the Lars Amundsen Family Foundation and the Japanese Red Cross Society. The services are implemented in the Hhohho and Shiselweni Regions through clinics operated by the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society.

IFRC Guidance for National Societies on Protection and Assistance for Unaccompanied and Separated Children

This Guidance Document is designed for anyone in a National Society who is assessing, designing, implementing, or monitoring and evaluating programming that involves UASC.

The Guidance Document is structured so that National Societies can use the sections that are most relevant to them. Some sections are relevant to all National Societies working with UASC, such as those for National Society preparedness, child safeguarding systems, actions for prevention, assessing needs, empowering and engaging UASC. Other sections like those on essential services and humanitarian diplomacy might have some parts more relevant than others depending on the context and focus each National Society is taking.
