Case Study - Gambia Red Cross Action against Child Marriage

The Gambia Red Cross is working to combat child marriage. Working in partnership with local schools it delivers prevention programs that aim to raise awareness and shift harmful practices. When girls are married, the Gambia Red Cross supports girls to continue access to education. In some situations where child marriages are impending, the Gambia Red Cross acts as a mediator to help families consider alternative options.

They are the result of a consultative process and two rounds of revisions by practitioners from the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This Guidance Document is designed for anyone in a National Society who is assessing, designing, implementing, or monitoring and evaluating programming that involves UASC.

The Guidance Document is structured so that National Societies can use the sections that are most relevant to them. Some sections are relevant to all National Societies working with UASC, such as those for National Society preparedness, child safeguarding systems, actions for prevention, assessing needs, empowering and engaging UASC. Other sections like those on essential services and humanitarian diplomacy might have some parts more relevant than others depending on the context and focus each National Society is taking.   

Cayman Islands: Preventing Sexual Violence against Children

The Cayman Islands Red Cross (CIRC) has delivered child-protection and sexuality-education programming for over two decades. The Protection Starts Here initiative was launched to bring together stakeholders working in child safeguarding, raise public awareness of child sexual abuse and to strengthen community capacity to prevent and respond to it. PSH shifted the organization’s focus from risk education to proactive protection, aiming to create a culture where adults take responsibility for the safeguarding of children.

This Safety Planning Guide has been developed by the Australian Red Cross. What is a safety plan? A personalised, practical plan that can help a person to recognise and respond to known safety threats. It provides simple and clear guidance on how a person can act to keep themselves and others safe should the threat arise, including what to do, who to contact and where to go. The danger or threat may be something that impacts a person’s physical, emotional, or mental wellbeing. Safety plans are intended to mitigate specific dangers and provide short term, practical options for the person to increase their safety.
