The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) actively implements Child-Friendly Spaces (CFS) as part of its emergency response, recognizing the unique vulnerabilities of children during disasters. CFS are designated safe spaces in evacuation centers or affected communities where children can play, learn, and receive psychosocial support in a structured and protective environment. These spaces are crucial for restoring a sense of normalcy, fostering resilience, and reducing the risks of violence, exploitation, and abuse.

The 2,000 daycare and youth welfare facilities operated by the German Red Cross provide a permanent nationwide system of education, care, and protection for children aged one to twelve years. These facilities support families in their daily lives while ensuring that every child—regardless of gender, background, or disability—is protected, respected, and empowered.

The Russian Red Cross delivers Family Centres for children through 25 regional branches. The Family Centres support children affected by displacement, stress, and disrupted living conditions and offers structured, group-based psychosocial and psychoeducational sessions for children.

Within a context of multiple over-lapping conflicts and disasters, the Myanmar Red Cross Society has been implementing Child-Friendly Spaces that offer safe environments where children can play, learn, express themselves, and receive support to cope with the challenges they face. These spaces provide environments where children can engage in structured and unstructured activities, play, and receive psychosocial support in crisis-affected areas.

As part of its disaster response, the Timor Leste Red Cross has included child friendly spaces to support children's mental health and psychosocial support and to increase protection.

This Rapid Assessment aimed to identify the protection needs of the child population in the intervention zones of the International Federation of the Red Cross within the framework of the appeals of the People's Movement in Colombia and Ecuador, with emphasis on the border regions, which will contribute to reinforcing the protection strategy of the operation.

This case study highlights outcomes from a specialized Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Caring for Children Moving Alone: Protecting Unaccompanied and Separated Children. The MOOC was developed by an interagency network led by the IFRC and International Social Services (ISS). The free, six-week MOOC aims to increase the knowledge and support improved practice of tens of thousands of local front-line workers who make decisions about the care and best interest of children on the move every day.
