In a world marked by intersecting crises, conflict, climate shocks, and displacement, the imperative to protect the dignity, rights, and well-being of all people – especially those most at risk – has never been greater. Throughout 2024, the IFRC and its 191 member National Societies have continued to uphold the principles of humanity and impartiality, by ensuring that Protection, Gender and Inclusion (PGI) is at the heart of our humanitarian actions.

In 2024, our network reached 24.3 million people through PGI programming. This increase of 21% reflects our deepening commitment to serving those most affected by violence, discrimination, and exclusion.

Case Study: the Italian Red Cross and CASA+, a refuge for LGBTQIA+ people in Rome

Casa+ is a semi-independent shelter run by the Italian Red Cross in Rome, with support from UNAR and the Waldensian Church. It provides safe housing and tailored support for LGBTQIA+ people facing homotransphobia or social exclusion. The facility hosts up to eight residents, offering psychological care, legal assistance, and empowerment programmes to help them rebuild their lives and achieve autonomy.

As part of its response to the population movement from Myanmar into Cox's Bazar, the Bangladesh Red Crescent has been implementing Child Friendly Spaces. These serve as protective environments where children can engage in structured play, express emotions, build friendships, and develop essential coping mechanisms. It plays a vital role in reducing isolation and improving mental well-being during the asylum process of people participating in the activity. The initiative addresses gaps left by mainstream services and supports people in reclaiming their identities.

Case Study: IFRC Ocean Viking and UASC

The IFRC is operating a Humanitarian Service Point at sea in the Central Mediterranean in partnership with international NGO SOS Mediterranée. The cooperation aims at reducing human suffering and preventing loss of life through a fully able-to-assist rescue ship (Ocean Viking). Among its services, the Ocean Viking provides protection and assistance to Unaccompanied and Separated Children.
