This issue brief addresses the opportunities to support the mainstreaming of child protection into anticipatory humanitarian action.

It includes recommendations to stakeholders on how anticipatory humanitarian action can reduce risks to violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation against children.

This analysis report, “We Need To Do Better: Climate Related Disasters and Child Protection in Eastern and Southern Africa” is a partnership between the Global Child Protection Area of Responsibility and the IFRC.

It aims to enhance the protection of children in climate related disasters. In particular, the analysis seeks to understand child perspectives about climate change, climate related disasters, and the risks they face. It provides practical ways to enhance coordinated and localized child protection approaches in preparing for climate related disasters in Eastern and Southern Africa.

This study aims to understand the climate related disaster risks facing children, the perspectives from children about the risks, and practical ways to enhance localized child protection approaches in preparing for climate related disasters in the Caribbean.

It is centered around focus group discussions and an online survey with 198 adolescents ages 14-17 years in the Bahamas, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Adolescents overwhelmingly feel that they do not have the information needed to be safe from potential violence, abuse, and exploitation in climate related disasters.

From 2021-2023, the Protection Advisory Board consulted with Movement components on a potential resolution on Protection at the Council of Delegates (CoD) in 2024 (originally planned for 2024).
This resolution will establish a Movement to agree to a common Movement understanding on Protection, promoting greater coherence and complementarity in the Movement’s Protection work, acommpanied by joint and indiviudal committments by each Movement component.

In preparation of the consultation and drafting process, the Norwegian Red Cross supported the Protection Advisory Board with a survey ("mapping") of existing Movement resolutions related to protection, extending across three decades (1993 to 2019).. It used the draft Movement Protection Framework to define and structure the resolutions analysed. The mapping is designed to be used as a quick overview of former resolutions, as well as serving three main purposes:

1) Identifying the gaps
2) Maintaining progress made
3) Defining the scope of protection-related resolutions

Through analyzing past resolutions, the mapping exercise provides detailed background to inform the future discussion on better defining a common Movement understand of Protection and complementary action.

The mapping seeks to highlight the aspects of protection within the Movement that are less covered by existing resolutions, as well as potential areas of inconsistencies or discrepancies. The objective is to contribute to determine the rationale and design for a new resolution by way of narrowing the scope and determining what the resolution will set out to do, and how it will add value to the topic-specific resolutions already adopted by the Movement.

Children need information that is carefully crafted to cater to their age group and preferences. Without these tailored materials, they might not understand or could misunderstand essential information that supports their protection and access to vital services.

The child-friendly communication materials below aim to help children stay safe, find their own solutions, prevent family separation or restore family links, know how to act ahead of a disaster, react if they find it hard to cope, and seek support from someone wearing a Red Cross or Red Crescent, a trusted adult, or a local helpline.
